The two most common types of machines are fixed-pressure machines like the AirSense 11 CPAP and Elite, and auto CPAP machines like the AirSense11 AutoSet. Replacement Parts: Keeping Your AirSense 11 Performing
Just like any other medical device, including other CPAP machines, your AirSense 11 will need some replacement parts from time to time. These essential components need routine replacement to keep your machine performing and by extension your valuable health. If you’re used to CPAP therapy none of these will come as a surprise, but if you’re a newer user here’s the rundown on what you can expect to replace regularly, and about how often.
Masks and Mask Parts
About every two weeks, you’ll want to replace your nasal mask cushions and nasal pillows mask cushions. As these parts can be quite challenging to clean compared to other machine parts, replacing these cushions regularly is important for hygiene and avoiding the trouble that comes with dirty equipment.
Your full face mask should be replaced about every month. If you find yourself tightening the straps a lot, the mask seems to have lost its spring, the cushion feels slippery after cleaning, or if your therapy just doesn’t leave you feeling as good as it used to, these are all signs you need to replace your mask.
Other mask parts that you should plan to replace regularly are the mask frame system and the mask headgear. Mask frame systems are recommended for replacement every three months and the headgear every six months.
Air Filters
Like any other machine with an air filter, your CPAP machine has a filter that needs to be replaced regularly. Dust and other air pollutants build up over time, making the filter less effective. The current Medicare replacement schedule calls for CPAP air filters to be replaced every two weeks. Be sure to check your filter frequently – if your environment is experiencing higher dust, pollen, or other pollutants, including during travel, you may need to replace it more often.
Tubing
Your CPAP tubing is your literal connection to your CPAP machine. Regular sanitation keeps it free from bacteria and other microbes that build up during normal use, but over time your tubing needs more than that. Over time and with use, your tubing can get small holes or tears. This creates air leaks and compromises the effectiveness of your treatment. The Medicare replacement schedule suggests replacement of tubing every three months.
Humidifier Chamber
According to the Medicare guidelines, you should plan to replace your humidifier water tub about every six months. Humidifier tanks that are cloudy and discolored, cracked, or have become pitted are ripe for growing bacteria or mold, especially in a heated humidifier like in the AirSense 11. You definitely don’t want to be breathing that, so visually inspect your tank each time you clean it and watch for these signs of wear.
CPAP Device
Eventually, your CPAP device itself needs to be replaced. Medicare recommends a new CPAP, APAP, or Bilevel machine every five years.
